Action Plan Progress

The Calais staff has approved the Action Plan for school year 2012-13.  The plan is ready for review and adoption by the Calais School Board.

Personnel

One-Year Grade 2 Teacher

The interview committee is pleased to report that they have three strong candidates.  The committee is hopeful that they will have a recommendation for Robbe prior to the June meeting of the CES School Board.

Guidance/Counseling

During my three years at Calais I have seen an increased need for guidance and counseling services at CES.  I am recommending that the guidance position be increased from the current .4FTE to a .6FTE increase for school year 2012-13.

Cook/Food Service Agent

Nancy Pulsifer has accepted early retirement; therefore she will not be returning to Calais next year.  Nancy has been dedicated to providing our staff and students nutritious and delicious meals and snacks.  She has provided meals for special events, such as “Bring a Neighbor to Lunch,” “Math n Muffins,” Bagels n Books,” and “Pi Night.”  She has crafted memorable meals for students on special days, such as Halloween and “Beach Day.”  Nancy also served on the CES Nutrition Committee and worked with committee members to organize classroom “taste tests” and introduce new items to the school menu.

Reading Support Teacher

Beth Lamphere has accepted a position closer to her home.  We are advertising for a .4FTE Reading Support Teacher.  This grant funded position requires a 3-76 Reading/English Language Arts Specialist endorsement.

Math Support Teacher

We are advertising for a .5 FTE math support teacher.  Unlike the reading position, the math position does not require a special endorsement; however preference will be given to those with math background and/or experience.

.5FTE Paraprofessional

I will be meeting with Special Education Teacher, Candace LaCroix, during the end of the year in-service days to review her caseload for 2012-13 to determine if there is a need to fill Mary Carpenter’s current .5 FTE Paraprofessional position.

I have met with Principal Marissa Meyer informing her of the current openings.  We have decided that I will fill the One-Year Grade 2 Teacher and Cook/Food Service Agent positions.  The math and reading positions are posted on Schoolspring.com and Marissa has access to this account.

Building

The library carpet will be replaced prior to the end of this fiscal year.  As library books and equipment are being boxed and removed for the new carpet installation, Eric will use this opportunity to conduct a complete inventory.  Eric has designed a new layout for the placement of bookshelves and the children’s area.  It will be exciting to see our new library with the start of the new school year.  Additionally, the kitchen floor will be replaced prior to the closing of this fiscal year.

Jason Rowell is researching the cost of adding a new level of master keys for the main office, principal’s office, Learning Center, nurse’s office and the kitchen door.

June In-service

The staff in-service days have been planned.  On June 18th, Grades 5 and 6 teachers will begin their day at U-32 for grade alike meetings to analyze the end of the year math test results and to plan use of the data.  Staff remaining at Calais will use the morning to pack up classroom materials. Transition meetings will be held in the afternoon for students on EST, 504 and IEP.  The staff will meet on the morning of June 19th to generate the 2012-13 school year calendar and to review next year’s schedule.  In the afternoon teacher will meet by unit level and begin planning curriculum for next year and plan the start of the new school year.  The work that is started on Tuesday will continue on Wednesday.

Action Plan Progress

The Action Plan Committee has completed the 2012-13 draft.  The next step is to share this plan with the Calais staff.  I will have the plan ready for review and adoption at the June meeting of the Calais School Board.

Guidance/Counseling

During my three years at Calais I have seen an increased need for guidance and counseling services at CES.  I have considered increasing the current .4 FTE guidance position; however our counselor, Cat Fair, works at another school the other 3 days of the workweek.  As the relationship between a counselor and student is built on trust and over time I could not see hiring an additional counselor for one day a week.

I have learned that Cat Fair has severed her employment at her other school.   Due to her recent decision to leave Waitsfield Elementary I recommend that the Calais School Board contemplates increasing her employment at Calais from .4 FTE to .6 FTE.

Calais Webpage and E-mail

To correspond with the School Board there is now a link on the CES website.  The SB provided the explanation of how to communicate to them.  If anyone uses the link to contact the SB, their email goes to the CES Administrative Assistant “inbox.”  If it is received more than 5 days prior to the SB meeting, the email communication will go to the SB in their packet.

This information and procedure was included in the past newsletter, May 4th, and it was posted on Front Porch Forum.

Parent/Teacher Conference

We had an exceptionally good turnout at the spring parent/teacher conference, with a 98% parent contact.  Families that were unable to attend were contacted by phone.

WiFi Update

Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor, Jason Rowell, has begun the installation of new access points in the new section of the building.  There is a built-in power indicator LED on the controller that lights when the power is applied as well as the LED on the router itself.  The classroom teacher will have the flexibility of turning the internet on and off and using it only when it is needed for instruction.

Building

The library carpet and the kitchen floor will be replaced before the end of the fiscal year.
