Welcome back!

We have new staff joining us this year.  Filling the Speech and Language Pathologist position is Morgan Kelner.  She brings with her more than 20 years of experience in this specialty field.  Two paraprofessional positions have been filled.  We welcome Phyllis Tillinghast and Loretta Wilson.

Calais teachers have been working throughout much of the summer planning their curriculum, taking courses, and in other ways honing their craft.  Most recently, teachers have spent time in August preparing their classrooms, which look bright, cheerful and inviting.  They are eager to continue with Responsive Classroom discipline during the first weeks of school and work to build community within their classrooms. This foundation is essential to ensure quality instructional time throughout the school year.  Responsive Classroom philosophy also will guide the creation of lunchroom recess and bus rules.

Hello Calais Students and Families,

The start of school is just around the corner. I hope that you are enjoying this summer vacation from school with some fun in the sun along with family adventures that you will want to share with me when you return to school on Thursday, August 26th. I find the additional hours of daylight invigorating and they provide a great chance to enjoy more time with family members.

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful turnout for this year’s Celebration of Learning “Mini-REAL.”  Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning is Calais Elementary School’s new economics unit.  It is a model of a larger community incorporating jobs, businesses and government to simulate a real economy.  Our program that teaches students about how money is earned, spent and saved.  Each student in kindergarten through grade six has a job, earns a paycheck, pays taxes and enjoys a break when s/he can visit a student-run business using Mini-REAL money that they have earned at the job.
