5/6th Grade Artists

Dear Parent, 

Your child worked on following VT Grade Level Expectations:

A5-6:10 Students show skill development when CREATING art by using drawing techniques including gesture, contour, shading and texture; by using various art tools and materials for specific purposes (watercolor, tempera, printing, and drawing materials).

A5-6:12 Students show understanding of visual arts CONCEPTS and VOCABULARY by describing and combining elements and principles of design (e.g., value, contrast, positive and negative;  by explaining and using different media, genre and techniques with appropriate vocabulary (e.g., gesture and contour drawing, proportion, and shading).

A5-6:18 Students show understanding of how the arts shape and reflect various cultures and times by studying famous artists.

A5-6:19 - Students approach artistic problem solving with an open mind and creative thinking by identifying challenges inherent in the work by generating a variety of strategies to address those challenges (e.g., Where can I use complementary colors? What painting technique works for this specific reproduction?

A5-6:20 - Students develop effective, personal work habits by demonstrating commitment and a sense of purpose (e.g., persevering to complete quality work, working to personal best); and, by taking responsibility for setting and adjusting goals for self (e.g., prioritizing responsibilities, managing time, and meeting completion deadlines).

Projects: Working on a right-brain exercise of drawing Vincent van Gogh’s compositions upside-down, using individual color to complete the project; Team project with each student working on 1/20th of the final painting using Portfolio oil pastels; choices of Grant Wood’s and Thomas Hart Benton’s pieces of American landscapes; Famous Artist Research: choice of artist, biography paper, and re-production of artwork using positive/negative shapes on carved printing pads and printing for final presentations.
